About us:

The Office of the National Defensor of Children’s Villages SOS is an independent office that supports children and young people in situations that have not been successfully resolved by the processes of safeguarding SOS Children’s Villages.

A national defender is a trusted person who can listen, support and guide children and young people. There are national, regional and world institutional defenders.

Each national defender follows the four principles: confidentiality, impartiality, independence and informality. They work independently of children’s villages as control and balance of protection with the objective of finding a solution to the proposed concern.

SOS Children’s Villages has been in Equatorial Guinea since 1992 and depends administratively on the International Office for the Western, Central and North Africa Region based in Dakar (Senegal).

About the position:

Position location: Equatorial Guinea/ Bata

1 year consulting contract with the possibility of renewal based on the available funds.

To carry out its mission, SOS Children’s Aldeas has decided to launch a national defender’s office.

The National Defender Equatorial Guineaas a designated neutral professional, it will respond to the concerns that the Sos Saberda team has not been able to resolve to the satisfaction of the child, young or adult involved.

He is a trustworthy person who has the skills and interest to work through his concerns and find a local solution for:

  • Respect the principles of confidentiality, independence, informality and impartiality;
  • Guide a fair process through listening and support;
  • Use conflict resolution skills;
  • Be a control and balance;
  • Identify trends and make recommendations to SOS Children Equatorial Guinea and the General Secretariat (SGC).

The National Defender will work independently of SOS Children’s Villages Equatorial Guinea and will depend on the regional national defender.

Profile, competences and qualifications:

  • A minimum of five years of demonstrated experience in one of the following fields: defender of the child, mediation, childhood safeguarding, childhood protection or rights of the child;
  • It requires a bachelor’s level in a relevant area as a right, mediation, social work, childhood. Psychology, children’s rights, childhood protection, childhood studies and youth, safeguarding or psychosocial well -being.
  • Minimum 3 years Experience at work with children and young people;
  • Work experience in communities;
  • Good level of knowledge of the rights of the child or the protection/prevention of childhood and related issues: protection of childhood, development and child health, legislation, policies, regulations and international standards related to childhood care;
  • Very good listener with good observation capacity;
  • Great communication capacity;
  • Solid facilitation/training skills – Ability to develop and implement attractive formations and continuous support workshops for children and representatives of children;
  • Demonstrated ability to establish relationships with children and young people, identify marginalized children and young people, connect with them and generate trust;
  • A problem solving, advisor and mediator capable of solving the concerns of young people and adults effectively and timely;
  • Understanding of the local context, including laws, policies, practices, language and social norms;
  • Be sensitive and representative in gender and diversity matters;
  • Have knowledge of Spanish. English is mandatory. It will also be valued to have knowledge of the French.
  • Understand the foundations of the National Defensor’s work;
  • You must have authorization to reside and work in Equatorial Guinea as a consultant;
  • The work experience in an NGO or international organization will be valued.
