European Parliament Sakharov Fellowship 2026 | Fully Funded

The European Parliament’s Sakharov Fellowship 2026 offers up to 14 human rights defenders selected from non-EU countries an opportunity to follow a two-week intensive training in Brussels and at another location in an EU Member State. Since 2016, the empowering program for human rights defenders has been organized annually following an initiative taken by the Sakharov Prize Community at the 25th Anniversary Conference of the Sakharov Prize. Moreover, the European Parliament Sakharov Fellowship 2026 aims to develop the capacity of human rights defenders to advocate for and effect positive change in human rights.

Through this funded fellowship program, fellows gain an introduction to EU policies and mechanisms that support human rights defenders and experience the European Parliament’s and the EU’s human rights work firsthand. In addition, the program includes meetings with Members of Parliament, officials of the EU institutions, and the Brussels-based human rights community. Human rights practitioners and experts provide tools to improve defenders’ work through workshops on communication and advocacy, security and safety, disinformation, resilience and well-being, and documentation of human rights violations. Furthermore, the Fellows will have space for individual advocacy, networking, and communication activities, making this a highly beneficial fellowship. As a result, they get a chance to form a network of like-minded peers who will support them throughout the fellowship program in Belgium.

Through this international European fellowship, the Fellows become part of the Parliament’s Sakharov Community of human rights defenders. Consequently, they maintain links with the work of the European Parliament and continue liaising with EU Delegations in their respective countries. Beyond the training, they are expected to act as multipliers, sharing best practices and lending peer-to-peer support.

The selection of candidates for the European Parliament Sakharov Fellowship prioritises gender balance and aims to represent a broad spectrum of human rights issues and geographic areas, in line with the European Parliament’s political priorities. Therefore, you will get a chance to spend two weeks in Belgium and gain hands-on experience in a diverse environment. Whether you want to showcase your talent or improve your professional skills, this funded fellowship is for you. Moreover, candidates should have a proven record in campaigning for human rights in an NGO, other organization, or in an individual capacity. Don’t miss this opportunity to showcase your potential to a global audience through this funded fellowship in Belgium. The international Fellowship in Europe covers return travel from the country of residence, accommodation during the program, and a daily living allowance.
